Tax Deadline Extended to May 21, 2021

The IRS has extended the tax deadline to file 2020 tax returns from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. This is an automatic extension and gives taxpayers an extra month to file and pay most federal income tax.

Estimated Tax Payments

This extension does not apply to estimated tax payments for quarter one, which are still due on April 15, 2021. If you have income that isn’t subject to income tax withholding, like self-employment income, interest, dividends, alimony or rental income, then you may be subject to making estimated tax payments. Please consult a tax professional if you have questions regarding this.

Still Need to File?

Even though taxpayers have more time, the IRS encourages taxpayers to file as soon as possible, especially if you are expecting a refund. At Northside Tax Service, we can help you prepare your tax return and ensure that you get all the credits and deductions you deserve.

Need More Time to File?

If you need more time to file past the May 17, 2021 deadline, you can file an extension using Form 4868. This gives you until October 15, 2021, to file your federal taxes but it does not extend the deadline for paying taxes. Those who owe the IRS must still pay by the May 17, 2021 deadline to avoid interest and penalties.
