Important 2021 Tax Season Dates
Here are some of the most important dates for the 2021 tax season. However, depending on your tax situation, there may be other important dates you need to be aware of. For a complete list of important IRS dates and deadlines, please read the IRS Publication 509, Tax Calendars.
February 12
The IRS will begin accepting and processing individual tax returns for the 2021 tax season.
April 15
Due date for paying Q1 Estimated Tax Payments
May 17
These due dates were extended from April 15 due to COVID-19.
Due date for filing 2020 tax returns.
Due date for paying 2020 tax owed to avoid owing interest and penalties.
Due date for requesting an automatic 6-month extension of time to file the return. You must still pay taxes owed at this time.
Due date to make 2020 contributions to IRA, HSAs, Archer MSAs, and Coverdell ESAs.
Due date to claim 2017 refunds.
October 15
Due date to file for those that requested an extension on their 2020 tax returns.
