Missing Tax Forms & What To Do
The IRS is open now which means that it’s time to file your taxes! However, with recent mail delays, it's important that taxpayers double-check that they have all the tax documents they need to file.
Common documents you may have that typically arrive at the end of January include:
Forms W-2, Wage and Tax Statement
Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income
Form 1099-INT, Interest Income
Form 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation
Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments; like unemployment compensation or state tax refund
What to Do If You’re Missing a Form
If you do not receive one of the tax forms you need to file, there are a few options:
Check if the form is available online: Forms for unemployment, tuition statements, and others may be available online.
Ask Your Employer, Payer, or Issuing Agency: Contact your employer, payer, or issuing agency to request the missing document. In addition, if one of your forms is incorrect, you should contact them to correct the form.
Use a Form 4854: If you are unable to obtain your W-2 or Form 1099-R, you can use Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, or Form 1099R, Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRA's Insurance Contracts, Etc. You can report your estimated wages or payments made to you, as well as any taxes withheld using this form.
File a Form 1040-X: If you receive one of your missing forms after you file your tax return and the information differs from the previous estimate, you must file a Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
