Ways to Get Ready to File Your Taxes

  1. Gather Your Tax Documents

Having all of your tax documents ready before you file will help the process go a lot smoother. Some common tax documents you may need include:

    • Form W-2 from employers

    • Form 1095-A if you purchased insurance from the marketplace

    • 1099-NEC for nonemployee compensation

    • 1099-G for unemployment income

If you will be filing with us this year, we will need:

    • Photo ID for you and your spouse

    • Copies of social security card(s) for you, spouse, and dependents

    • Birthdates for dependents

    • Last year’s tax return if available

  2. Report any name or address changes to your employer

If you changed your name or address within the past year, then you must notify your employer so that they have accurate information to put on your W-2. Discrepancies between your W-2 and tax return may cause delays.

  3. Apply for an IRS Identity Protection PIN

Starting in mid-January 2021, taxpayers can request an IRS Identity Protection PIN. This is a six-digit number that prevents someone from filing a tax return using your Social Security number. To learn more and apply, visit this page on the IRS website: Get an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN).

  4. Renew expiring ITINs

Some Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers will expire before you file in 2021. To find out if yours will be expiring, visit this page on the IRS website: Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
