Working Families Tax Credit

A new tax credit is available for low-to-moderate income Washington residents. The Working Families Tax Credit is administered by the Washington State Department of Revenue and ranges from $50 to $1,255 depending on the number of qualifying children and income level.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Working Families Tax Credit, individuals and families must meet the following requirements:

  • Earned income in 2023

  • Have a valid Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

  • Live in Washington for over half the year in 2023 (at least 183 days)

  • At least 25 years old and under 65 years old OR have a qualifying child in 2023

  • File a 2023 federal tax return

  • Meet certain income requirements

  • Eligible to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on their 2023 tax return

Note: Filers with an ITIN who meet eligibility requirements for the EITC but are unable to claim it due to having an ITIN can still qualify for the Working Families Tax Credit.

Income Requirements

The credit amounts for the Working Families Tax Credit are based on the number of qualifying children, filing status, and AGI. Children must meet the IRS Qualifying Children Rules for the Earned Income Tax Credit but can have a valid Social Security Number or ITIN.

Note: Families are only claim up to three children for the credit.

How to Apply

There are a variety of ways individuals and families can apply for the Working Families Tax Credit

  • Apply online: Apply using MyDOR, which has English and Spanish instructions and applications. There are also various tax preparation software that you use can apply.

  • Apply in person with a tax preparer: If you would like in-person help filing, some tax preparers in your area may be able to help. Clients who file at Northside Tax Service can receive assistance applying for the Working Families Tax Credit.

  • Apply by paper: Paper applications are available in various languages if you would prefer to mail in your application.

What You Need to Apply

To apply for the credit, you will need:

  • A copy of your 2023 federal tax return (you must file to receive the credit)

  • Your Social Security Numer or ITIN, and dates of birth for you, your spouse, and children

  • Your Washington state driver’s license or ID (if applicable)

  • Your residential and mailing address

  • Your bank and routing number if you choose direct deposit

Application Deadline

Eligible applicants have until December 31, 2024, to apply for the 2022 tax credit. However, we recommend applying when you file your 2023 federal tax return to receive your credit as soon as possible.
